What IT By Design’s Culture Actually Looks Like: Two Engineers on Growth and AI

IT By Design’s culture shows up most clearly in how its engineers describe their own career paths, not in a mission statement. In this episode of Culture and Career Corner, Vineet, Senior System Advanced Administrator, and Chirag, Senior System Administrator, both from the India office, walked host Anamika through what got them here, what the culture actually rewards, and how they use AI on the job without putting client data at risk.

Who Are Vineet and Chirag, and How Did They Grow at IT By Design?

Vineet joined with a technical foundation already in place, working across servers, networking, Microsoft 365, and Azure. Chirag came in through a referral, starting on a small MSP account with Microsoft 365 and Intune.

Chirag later helped pilot a brand new team. That team has since grown to more than 12 engineers, and Chirag now works as an escalation engineer.

Two different starting points. Same pattern: narrow, specific work expanding into broader technical ownership over time.

What Makes IT By Design’s Culture Different?

The direct answer, in Vineet and Chirag’s own words: learning and speed.

Vineet pointed to the ITBD University Portal and colleagues who moved from non-technical to technical roles simply by showing willingness to learn. That is the real test of a culture. Not what the company says about growth, but whether someone with no technical background has an actual, structured path to become technical.

Chirag described the culture as fast-paced, in a good way, driven by how quickly the company adopts new technology. Both observations point to the same conclusion: IT By Design’s environment rewards people who treat change as opportunity, not disruption.

Why Do “Measure Twice, Cut Once” and Lifelong Learning Matter for MSP Careers?

Vineet’s core lesson: never stop learning, and be willing to unlearn. Technology changes constantly. The engineers who struggle are the ones who assume yesterday’s knowledge is still enough today.

Chirag’s lesson is more operational: measure twice, cut once. Test changes in a sandbox or virtual environment before touching production.

He added a second point that matters as much as the technical one: technical skills matter, but relationships build a career. Never hesitate to collaborate or ask for help.

As AI absorbs more routine technical work, this becomes the real differentiator. Not the tool skill. The judgment and the relationships around it.

How Should MSP Teams Use AI Tools Like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity?

Short answer: as a copilot, not a replacement, and never with client data.

Vineet’s guidance has two parts. First, know how to prompt. AI is only as useful as the clarity of the request. Second, and more critical for an MSP: never upload anything related to a client’s environment or IT By Design’s own environment into an AI tool. Security comes before convenience.

Chirag framed it the same way, using the copilot analogy directly. AI should sit in the side seat, helping with everything from emails to troubleshooting, never unsupervised. His caution: AI can hallucinate, and it can give a confidently wrong answer just to seem helpful. His practice is to verify anything AI produces against original sources before acting on it.

Vineet closed with the point that ties the episode together: you can give AI a prompt, but without underlying knowledge, you can still make a serious mistake. AI does not replace expertise. It requires it.

What This Means for MSP Leaders Building an AI-Ready Culture

A company that invests in structured learning produces engineers who default to caution and verification with new tools, rather than blind trust. A culture that promotes from within produces career paths like Vineet’s and Chirag’s, where both technical range and specialization had room to develop.

That consistency, between how people grow and how people think, is the real signal of a strong MSP culture.
